Do you remember, way back when we first met, how we talked about cats? I told you everything I knew about them (I have learned a lot more since) and told you there’d always be room here for cat stories. Well now, I have made some new friends, one Ms. Bunny Jean Cook and one very nice lady Ms. Alinda from www.rabbitmatch.org, who have ever so politely pointed out that dogs and cats are not the only animals in need of new adoptive families. Did you know BUNNIES need rescuing too? Guess what else is going on with all this bunny business? It’s rabbit season! No, silly not to hunt them, but to buy them. Or, like in a lot of cases around Easter, to “impulse buy’ them or give them as gifts.
As I am sure you can tell by my tone, I had no idea about all this. I think bunnies are the cutest…if dogs were allowed to have pets, I would want a bunny friend. I know they can be litter box trained and have run of the house like me and so I’d be totally sold. But then I learned more from my new friends and realized they may not be the right companion for me or a lot of other families. I would have to seriously consider some other things about bunnies before I brought one home, like…
They need to be spayed/neutered, just like dogs and cats. I don’t have any money to do that–I’m a dog!
Bunnies are inquisitive and social. Even though they don’t always like to be held they still need you there to spend time with them and to make sure they get exercise. Hmmm, my schedule is a little full these days…what with the blog and all…
Rabbits need regular vet visits, just like dogs and cats, and they can live to be 10 years old with proper care. Uh oh. I am already 8…I don’t like that math. And again the dog thing is an issue—I don’t have a car. How would I get them to the vet?
And the most important thing of all… setting them “free” is not an option. Turning bunnies loose in the woods or your neighborhood because you are too busy or tired of them is a death sentence. I already figured that out because I know it is the same for cats and for me too. I just wanted to remind YOU of that. Seriously, don’t do it.
So what does this mean for Bunny Season? Make mine (white) chocolate. Make yours chocolate too…unless you are sure you are ready to commit to pet rabbit. It is not any less of a commitment than a cat or dog, there are no shortcuts. The other thing they do “just like cats and dogs” is love you. They make good companions and let’s face it, they out-cute me even on my best day. If it turns out you have room in your life and your heart for a rabbit please consider adopting one. You can visit www.rabbitmatch.org for all you need to know about them before you bring them home and to see bunnies available for adoption. If you are not ready to adopt a rabbit, like I know I’m not, you can join me and help to raise money for rescue by attending the St. Paws Day PawPawty on Twitter. Visit Ms. Bunny Jean Cook’s blog or find her on Twitter for more info and be sure to tell her Shady sent you!
